What locals would tell you

  • Shabbat meals must be booked ahead: Chabad Keren Or (Friday dinner 19:00 in winter, day meal 12:30; sign up at app.flowiz.io/budr/f/ or WhatsApp +36 30 360 1315; from about EUR 42 adult, EUR 32 child), Carmel (Kazinczy 31, about 16,500-19,500 Ft per meal; one undated guide says EUR 35 and prepay) and Hanna (Kazinczy 29, about EUR 30-70 per person: EUR 30 prepaid by 14:00 Friday per an undated guide, EUR 50-70 in 2026 guides). Prices differ by source and neither the restaurants' sites nor Chabad's FAQ publish prices or prepayment terms, so confirm when you book.
  • Stay around Károly krt. and the Kazinczy/Wesselényi streets: Kazinczy shul, Keren Or, Carmel and Hanna are all within about 5-10 min on foot. Hotel Memories (Wesselényi 4), Hilton Garden Inn and Silver Crown (Szentkirályi 4, mechanical keys and a hot water urn) are set up for Shabbat observers; BQA Budapest (400+ apartments, boutique hotels) offers mechanical keys, plata and urn via WhatsApp +972 50 932 0228, but its buildings are not fully Shabbat-adapted.
  • Friday closes early: winter candle lighting is about 16:00 (16:01 on 6 Nov 2026). Brooklyn Bagel closes about 14:00, Kosher Market about 14:00, Carmel 13:30 (one Oct 2026 guide says 14:30), the bakery and Tel Aviv Café 15:00, Café Tamar and Hummusbar 16:00; Marrakesh and Shuk HaCarmel are closed all Friday, so shop Thursday or early Friday.
  • Most Jewish Quarter places are certified by the Beis Din Tzedek of Budapest's Haredi communities (Rav Baruch Oberlander); Hanna is under the MAOIH Orthodox community (Chabad's list says CRC) and Hummusbar lists Chug Chasam Sofer Petach Tikva. Dohány Street Synagogue is Neolog, a sight rather than an Orthodox minyan.
  • Airport: no kosher outlet at BUD was confirmed; Brooklyn Bagel (dairy) is reported to serve in the Plaza Premium Lounge, so bring food. Falafel Bar reopens on Saturday night (19:00 on Chabad's list).
  • Free Shabbat gemach: hot plate, urn (samovar) and other Shabbat items on loan with a EUR 100 deposit. WhatsApp +972 52 720 0300 (text only) on Friday for pickup details; winter pickup window is 12:30-14:30. Bring a European plug adapter.
  • The eruv covers Pest only and does not cross the Danube, so do not carry over the bridges to Buda. Check eruv.hu for the 'Eruv is on' status and boundary map before Shabbat.
  • Minyan times change weekly: ZSILIP (Újpesti rkp. 1) posts a weekly poster at zsilip13.hu/het/ (30 Oct 2026: candle lighting 16:11, Kabbalat Shabbat and kiddush 18:30; sign up for the Friday kiddush on the form linked there). Kazinczy sets Friday evening just after candle lighting (13 min in its one posted schedule) but publishes no winter times, so call.
  • Several Google reviewers (undated) say Keren Or marks pre-ordered Shabbat seats at the table and gives visitors breakfast after weekday Shacharit; one reviewer was turned away at Vasvári Pál for Shabbat afternoon Mincha because it was full and guarded, so message ahead.
  • Hotels with no stated Shabbat setup: Booking.com (Nov 2026) lists key-card access and a lift, with no mechanical key named, at Astoria, Leonardo, Kempinski, Corinthia and Moments, so ask for a manual key and lift plan in writing. Torah in Motion's 2019 and 2024 tours based their Shabbat at the Continental (Dohány u.) and attended Kazinczy shul on Shabbat morning.
  • Not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places and Chabad Hungary's current kosher list): a dairy 'Kosher Deli' named in older guides, and King's Hotel (glatt kosher, Nagy Diófa u.), which appears only in a 1996 article reposted in 2023. Rosenstein and Mazel Tov are Jewish-style restaurants, not kosher (pork or meat-and-dairy menus). Ask Chabad Hungary (WhatsApp +36 30 360 1315) before relying on any of these.

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
