Eruv

Eruv: yes

The Sea Point eruv (declared kosher by Rabbi Klein and the Beth Din on 18 Jun 2010) runs from Glengariff Rd (Green Point) to Clifton 2nd Beach on Victoria Rd, takes in Marine Drive on High Level Rd (Bantry Bay) and part of Ocean View Dr, and spans beachfront to mountain; boundaries are checked before every Shabbat. No hotline or live status page found online as of Nov 2026: eruv.org.za/ct has a map and sends you to its Facebook page for current status (no readable mirror found); an unofficial email forum sends weekly updates. Edge houses need care: ask Alan Levin or a local rabbi. Gardens/CBD, Claremont and Constantia are not mentioned. Weekly status ↗

What locals would tell you

  • Where to stay: Sea Point puts Marais Road Shul, Morasha, Chabad, Ohr Somayach and the Sephardi shul within a few blocks, with Premier Hotel (kosher kitchens) next to Marais Road. Gardens/CBD (Great Synagogue) is about 3 km away and Claremont about 10 km, so choose one base for Shabbat.
  • Shabbat meals: Morasha runs a 'Join a Morasha Family over Shabbat' hosting list (info@morasha.co.za); Chabad is on 021 434 3740 but publishes no booking details. Avron's Place, Berkies and The Kosher Collective (koshercollective.co.za, 021 510 5882) sell food to order. No prepaid hotel-delivery service verified: order early in the week.
  • Friday closing: Cafe Riteve and The Press close 15:00 and Berkies and Norries 16:00; The Press reopens about 18:45 Saturday. Checkers, Spar and Pick n Pay are ordinary supermarkets open on Shabbat, so buy kosher items before candle lighting. Candle lighting is 19:01 on 6 Nov and Shabbat ends 20:01, so summer Shabbat finishes late.
  • Security: Marais Road and the Gardens Shul ask visitors to submit the visitor request form (csocapetown.formstack.com/forms/visitor_request_form) before Shabbat or festival services and to carry passport or ID; Claremont wants first-time visitors to arrange in advance. Guards turn people away without notice, so register first.
  • Eruv and walking: the Sea Point eruv covers most of Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Fresnaye (map and Facebook status via eruv.org.za/ct; boundaries are checked before every Shabbat and an unofficial email forum sends weekly updates); its 2010 route included a promenade stretch from Saunders Rocks to Three Anchor Bay, so check the current map before a Shabbat promenade walk. Check status Friday afternoon.
  • Logistics: no kosher outlet at CPT found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places and the Beth Din list), so buy provisions at Checkers The Point or Super Spar on arrival (both open daily). Sort Uber or airport transfers before candle lighting. Booking.com lists key-card access and ordinary lifts at Premier, Protea, Winchester, Atlantic Affair and Mount Nelson and no Shabbat lift anywhere: ask your hotel for a manual key or a Shabbat lift and whether lifts and locks run on backup power during load-shedding.
  • Friday-night times: only Marais Road (posted for 30 Oct) and Gardens (seasonal) are current. The Sephardi shul posts times weekly, Morasha's page is a few weeks old, and Chabad, Ohr Somayach and Camps Bay publish no clock times: phone the shul on Thursday.
  • Not listed (checked Google Places and the Cape Beth Din's Oct 2024 'Kosher Cape Town' list, Nov 2026): Crumbs and Cream Sea Point (126 Main Rd), Waterfront and Woodstock ice cream shops, because the Beth Din list says only the factory is under Kosher SA supervision, not the retail stores; Chabad's restaurant page still shows The Press at 176 Main Rd but it is now at 299 Main Rd; the Highlands House coffee shop (Cafe B'Tayavon, 9 Gorge Rd) is closed weekends and Jewish holidays. Ask Chabad (021 434 3740) before relying on any of these.

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
