What locals would tell you

  • Best base for Shabbat: West Rogers Park (Devon Ave to Touhy, around California Ave) for shuls, kosher food and the local eruv, but few hotels were found there (Google Places check, Nov 2026); Lakeview (ASBI) has several walkable hotels.
  • Lakeview Shabbat meals: ASBI places guests with member hosts. Use the form at asbi.org/hospitality.html at least a week ahead (hospitality@asbi.org); ASBI does not arrange lodging. Elsewhere, call shuls and Chabad houses directly to be hosted.
  • Friday closing times are early in winter (candle lighting is about 4:20pm in November): Tel Aviv Pizza 1:30pm, Crunch 2:30pm, Great Chicago Food 3pm, bakery 3pm. Ken's Diner, Shallots and Milt's are closed Fridays. Shop Thursday.
  • Local hechsher is the cRc (Chicago Rabbinical Council, 773-465-3900): full list at consumer.crckosher.org/kosher-establishments. Mariano's Skokie kosher section is cRc; Jewel on Howard St in Evanston is OU. Both stay open on Shabbat.
  • Eruvin are separate and checked by hotline, not the cRc site: West Rogers Park 773-743-7882 (after 2pm Friday; chicagoeruv.tripod.com), Lincolnwood-Peterson Park 847-677-3788, Skokie 847-679-3788 (eruvstat.us/skokie), Lakeview eruvstat.us/lakeview. eruvstat.us showed 'not checked' on Oct 30, so call. The Loop has no eruv listed.
  • Downtown visitors: Chabad Center for Jewish Life (Gold Coast, 312-664-7770) is the main Shabbat option and asks for an RSVP for Friday-night dinner; Lubavitch Chabad of the Loop (401 S LaSalle, 312-427-7770) is nearest the Loop hotels; Chicago Loop Synagogue is Orthodox; JTA (2021) reports Saturday services, but Friday-night service and clock times were not found online as of Nov 2026, so call before going. Allow about 35 min by taxi from O'Hare to West Rogers Park.
  • Pre-ordered Shabbat meals: Shallots Bistro Catering (847-677-3463, shallotsbistro.com/catering) does Shabbos meals by pickup or drop-off; a Google reviewer says Ta'boun Grill used to be their Shabbat-meal source. Collect before candle lighting (about 4:18pm Nov 6); hotel delivery is not stated by any of them.
  • Lakeview: Chabad East Lakeview (615 W Wellington, 773-495-7127) is a few blocks from the ASBI-listed hotels; a reviewer was served a Friday-night meal as a walk-in, but call ahead.
  • Hotel keys and elevators: Booking.com lists or says key-card rooms at Hawthorne Terrace, City Suites, Versey, Zachary, Willows and Central Loop; only Staypineapple Loop is reported (Booking.com Q&A, unconfirmed) to use metal keys. None of these hotels was found publishing a Shabbat elevator or manual-key policy (checked Nov 2026), so ask before booking.
  • Hotel Versey: TripAdvisor reviews from Aug 29-Sep 7, 2026 say the main elevator was out of service (service elevator or stairs only); Oct 2026 reviews do not mention it. Confirm it works if you need an elevator on Shabbat.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Hungarian Kosher Foods (Skokie): now operating as Sarah's Tent, 4020 Oakton St, per a community guide. · Tel-Aviv Kosher Bakery (2944 W Devon): now Manna Bakehouse on Google, Gratzia Bakery on the cRc list; confirm current name and certification. · chicagoloopsynagogue.org serves an unrelated spam page, so it was not used; the synagogue's real site appears to be chiloopsyn.org (its email domain), which blocks automated fetching. · Sarah's Tent Kosher Market: no confirmed website; sarahstent.com is an unrelated ministry site. · Tein Li Chow (inside Jewel, 2485 W Howard St): not on the cRc list; Google shows a phone (847-328-4642) but reviews conflict, one calling it permanently closed. Unconfirmed. · Chabad East Lakeview: an undated JUF guide lists 655 W Irving Park Rd #207, 773-743-5434 (Rabbi Baruch Hertz); Google and the Acheinu directory give 615 W Wellington, 773-495-7127, which this file uses. Confirm by phone.
