What locals would tell you

  • Great Synagogue security: visitors not known to the congregation must register in advance (djs.dk form by group size, or email kontakt@djs.dk with a passport scan per guest, phone, email, any synagogue visits in Sweden/Norway/Finland, and reason for visiting). Bring your passport and expect armed guards at the gate.
  • Shabbat meals: the Chabad House (Ole Suhrs Gade 10) hosts Friday dinner and Shabbat lunch; book on its JotForm. Suggested EUR 45 adult dinner, EUR 40 lunch, EUR 30 child. Takeaway Shabbat meal 350 kr plus VAT with 48 hours' notice, +45 33 16 18 50. Machsike Hadas is next door.
  • Stay in Indre By or Østerbro (Machsike Hadas advice). Chabad's guide lists Hotel Alexandra (physical keys), Kong Arthur and Ibsens (electronic keys, helpful staff). Kong Arthur and Ibsens are about 10 min from both shuls; Krystalgade and Rådhuspladsen hotels are close to the Great Synagogue but 15-20 min from Chabad. The two shuls are about 0.9 km (12 min) apart.
  • Friday and Thursday shopping: Taim is closed Fri and Sat, and Gils Deli (Lyngbyvej 87, 2.7 km out) closes Fri 13:00 and is open Thu until 19:30. Buy Shabbat food by Thursday and order any Chabad takeaway early in the week.
  • Shabbat times swing widely at 55.7 N: winter candle lighting is around 15:00-16:00 (Chabad Mincha at candle lighting, dinner 17:45; Machsike Hadas Kabbalat Shabbat at sundown), midsummer Shabbat starts after 21:30 (Chabad Mincha 19:45, dinner about 21:00). Check local zmanim and the Chabad meal time before you book flights.
  • Airport: no kosher outlet found online at CPH as of Nov 2026, so bring food. Metro M2 runs direct to Nørreport in about 20 min. Danish hotel breakfast buffets usually have kosher-friendly basics (knækbrød, cereal, butter, honey, smoked salmon, fresh produce) per the community guide.
  • Malmö (Sweden) Chabad, Jöns Filsgatan 2, +46 40 686 00 87, is the nearest alternative community but needs a train across the Øresund bridge, so go before Shabbat. Walk to shul: Copenhagen bike lanes are fast, watch for cyclists.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Hotel Skt. Petri (Krystalgade 22): older Shabbat-friendly listings use this name; it is being rebranded as 1 Hotel Copenhagen (now listed under that name). · Hotel Jørgensen (Rømersgade 11, +45 33 13 81 86): Chabad's older guide lists it as a budget option 10 min from either shul and TotallyJewishTravel calls it non-kosher; not found on Google Places under that name as of Nov 2026, so status unconfirmed (not known to be closed); call before relying on it · I. A. Samson / Kosher Butik / Kosher Delight Copenhagen: not found online as of Nov 2026 (not on the community's current kosher list, where Gils Deli is the only shop named; checked Google Places, Danish and Hebrew searches); status unknown, not confirmed closed · Community (Krystalgade) mikveh: not found on djs.dk as of Nov 2026; Chabad's visitor page says Copenhagen has two mikvahs but names only the Ole Suhrs Gade 12 one, so only that one is listed; ask Chabad on +45 33 16 18 50. Shir Hatzafon (Progressive) deliberately excluded. · Counts: the Machsike Hadas visiting page (https://machsikehadas.dk/visiting/, read 2 Nov 2026) calls Taim 'Copenhagen's only kosher restaurant' and names one mikveh; Google Places (Danish, English, Hebrew, Nov 2026) showed no Orthodox synagogue in Copenhagen beyond the three listed
