What locals would tell you

  • Stay in the old town between Main Street, Irish Town and Engineer Lane: all four shuls, the mikvah and most kosher shops are within about 0.5 km. The Eliott (listed by TotallyJewishTravel as Jewish Observant Friendly) and the Bristol (physical keys per Booking.com Q&A) are closest; no hotel was found stating a Shabbat key or elevator, so confirm a metal key before booking.
  • Shabbat meals: Ethy's Eatery Catering (7 Bomb House Lane, +350 54018819) served all three Shabbat meals to visitors per Google reviews; call ahead. For hospitality contact the community office (+350 200 72606, mbjc@gibtelecom.net); a 2019 visiting group ate Shabbat meals in the community's Talmud Torah building from a local kosher caterer.
  • Friday closing (Google Maps): Grill & Grain and J.J. Amar 15:00, Amar's 15:30, Deli Express 17:30; all closed Saturday. OU zmanim (read 1 Nov 2026) gives candle lighting 18:02 and Shabbat end 19:01 for the coming Shabbat. Shop Thursday or early Friday.
  • All four shuls are Sephardic and no clock timetable was found online as of Nov 2026 (the community's own homepage jewishgibraltar.com, S&P Central and the shul sites list none; the homepage also mentions a fifth synagogue where children run a full Shabbat morning service, and Google lists a 'Jewish Community Management Board Synagogue' at 10 Bomb House Lane with no service reports, so ask the office): email nefusotyehudah@gmail.com or call +350 200 72606 for Friday and Shabbat times. S&P Central says weekday services are at Nefutsot Yehuda from autumn to early spring and at the Great Synagogue in late spring and summer. Women sit in the balcony (2019 visitor report); some services use Ladino. Tourist visits outside services are by arrangement (+350 200 76477); a Google reviewer found the door locked.
  • Arrival: GIB is about 10 minutes from Main Street by taxi; Malaga (AGP) is about 90 minutes by road. Euronews (15 Jul 2026) reports the Spain-Gibraltar border fence was removed and the land frontier has no routine checks under the EU-UK treaty; passport checks now happen at Gibraltar's airport and port, run jointly by UK and Spanish officials. Carry a passport anyway and check current rules; do not arrive near candle lighting. Pedestrians used to cross the runway on Winston Churchill Avenue when it was open: confirm it is still the route.
  • Kashrut: TotallyJewishTravel names the Gibraltar Rabbinate and the local Rabbanut, and heads its Gibraltar list '6 Kosher Supervised Eateries with Hashgacha', but the certifier is not named on the pages read; no published kashrut list was found, so ask each place for its certificate. No Chabad house found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places in English and Hebrew, Chabad directory and Hebrew searches, and the community homepage); ask Chabad of Costa del Sol in Marbella on +34 602 53 24 64. Older guides name Verdi Verdi (Casemates Square, 2011 EJC article), Uncle Sam's and a Solomon Levy shop; none was found in Google Places or any current list as of Nov 2026. Begdouri Butchers (25 Engineer Lane) shows no kosher claim, so it is not listed. Money is the Gibraltar pound at par with sterling. A Marbella pairing was not researched here.
