Mikvah

Mikwe of the Jüdische Gemeinde (the only mikvah in Hamburg)

Hohe Weide 34, 20253 Hamburg (synagogue building)

Booking: +49 177 4257461 (Chani Bistritzky; call or WhatsApp, book ahead; hours not published; EUR 5 for non-members)

What locals would tell you

  • Hohe Weide synagogue entry is by prior email registration only (names, addresses, short reason for the visit) with ID; Chabad asks for photos of all passports and the date you will attend. Bags are inspected at the gate, large bags and phones stay out, men cover heads (kippot lent in the lobby), women sit separately. The registration email is script-hidden on both the jghh.org and Chabad pages, so ask Chabad (+49 178 7108123, English) or the Gemeinde (+49 40 4409440) for it.
  • Shabbat meals: Chabad Hamburg's Kosher-food-places page (read 2 Nov 2026) states there are no kosher restaurants or hotels in Hamburg, and neither Chabad nor the Gemeinde publishes weekly Shabbat meals; Chabad says to email the Gemeinde about meals. Ask Chabad (+49 40 41424190) about hospitality and the Kosher Market catering (email enquiry) well before the week, and bring backup food. Chabad's Synagoge page mentions a Shabbat service plus buffet several times a month at its Rentzelstrasse centre, but gives no dates, so ask.
  • Friday and Sunday: the Kosher Market closes Fri 14:00 (Google shows 16:00), is closed Sat and Sun, and the Gemeinde office closes Fri 14:00 (Google). Winter candle lighting is before 16:00 in mid-December, so shop Thursday; order challah ahead. EDEKA Grindelallee 126 is open Saturday but carries only a small marked kosher range.
  • Where to stay: no source read states a Shabbat key or lift at any Hamburg hotel. Chabad's hotel list is a plain list that tells guests to check electronic keys and lights themselves and says it gives no specific recommendations. Guest reviews: Hotel Vorbach still gives real keys and has a lift; Boritzka has no lift; am Rothenbaum has limited reception hours and a small lift; Booking.com lists key-card access at Grand Elysee, Radisson, Mercure and YoHo. The Rotherbaum hotels are 2-9 min from Chabad but 23-30 min on foot from Hohe Weide; Boritzka and YoHo are 6-7 min from it. Ask for a mechanical key and check in before Friday dark.
  • Weekday Shacharit is at the Chabad house (Rothenbaumchaussee 19) daily at 8:15 with no registration; Shabbat and holiday services are at Hohe Weide only. Bornplatz Synagogue in the Grindel quarter is being rebuilt and is not yet open for services (bornplatzsynagoge.org for status and tours).
  • No eruv found online as of Nov 2026, so do not carry unless Chabad confirms. No kosher outlet at HAM is mentioned in Chabad or Gemeinde information (airport not checked directly), so bring food. Shabbat walk: the Alster shore and Alsterpark are a short stroll from the Rotherbaum hotels (Google reviewers cite the riverside and park near Vorbach).

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Cafe Leonar (Grindelhof) is sometimes mentioned as Jewish-run or Jewish-themed but is not kosher; Chabad Hamburg's Kosher-food-places page (https://www.chabadhamburg.de/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/4291070/jewish/Kosher-food-places.htm, read 2 Nov 2026) states 'there are no kosher restaurants or hotels in Hamburg' · Deli King (Grindelallee, 2013 press; Google now shows Grindelberg 73, +49 171 2836760, filed as a liquor store with 1 review, Mon-Thu 9-18, Fri 9-14, closed Sat): a Tageskarte article of 15 Oct 2013 said it would open as a kosher food and wine shop with patisserie and no hot kitchen, but no current kosher status or hechsher found anywhere, so not listed - call first · Talmud Tora minyan (Grindelhof 30): not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked the Gemeinde and Chabad Hamburg pages, Google Places). Grindelhof 30 is the Gemeinde seat and school and no minyan is listed there; ask the Gemeinde on +49 40 4409440 · Sephardic or Bukharian minyan: not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places in German, English and Hebrew, jghh.de, Chabad Hamburg, TotallyJewishTravel, which lists only two Hamburg shuls, Chabad and the Gemeinde); ask Chabad Hamburg on +49 40 41424190. Liberal Jewish Community (Flora-Neumann-Str. 1) is not Orthodox and was not listed · Hotel Amsterdam (Moorweidenstr. 34, +49 40 4411110): on Chabad's list (4 min to Chabad) but Google reviewers report limited reception hours and the key held by the porter, so left out for space; Alameda, Baseler Hof, The Fontenay, Fairmont, Renaissance, Steigenberger and Motel Hamburg are on Chabad's list but more than 15 min on foot from Grindelhof and Hohe Weide (list: 12-35 min to Chabad, 20-45 min to the synagogue), so not listed · Hotel Atlantic Kempinski (An der Alster 72-79): Chabad's list gives 7 min to Chabad and 13 min to the synagogue, but the map distance is about 1.6 km to Chabad and 3 km to Hohe Weide, so those figures were not trusted and it is not listed

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
