Mikvah

Şişli (Bet Israel) Synagogue Mikve

Efe Sokak No:4, Şişli, Istanbul

Booking: Page says the Şişli mikve is still in service but gives no booking rules, hours or address; arrange through the switchboard +90 212 292 03 86 or nevesalom@nevesalom.org (nevesalom.org/iletisim.html)

What locals would tell you

  • Register before you go: every synagogue wants your passport details by email in advance and runs a security check at the door (carry the same passport). Balat needs 3+ days' notice, so allow 2-3 days for all. Registration contacts: nevesalom@nevesalom.org (Neve Shalom and Şişli), askenazivakfi@askenazivakfi.org, ortakoyetsahayimvakfi@gmail.com, hisva@hisvaistanbul.org; Chief Rabbinate office +90 212 293 87 94/95. Kuzguncuk Bet Yaakov (Asian side): Google visitors report it closed to walk-ins; the community says to share passport details first (+90 216 343 16 98, kuzguncukcem@gmail.com).
  • Stay in Nişantaşı/Şişli to walk to Bet Israel (Efe Sok), or in Galata, 2-4 min from Neve Shalom and the Ashkenazi Synagogue. Hilton Bosphorus, Divan, Marriott Şişli and the Taksim hotels (Point, Nippon) are roughly 1.1-1.5 km straight-line from Bet Israel (my estimate), so poor for a Shabbat walk. Sultanahmet is far from every shul.
  • Chabad: Rabbi Mendy and Chaya Chitrik host an open-house Shabbat (about 70 guests most weeks). Reserve a dinner seat by emailing rabbi@rabbimendy.com (2022 interview page) or mendy@rabbimendy.com (Hadassah Magazine, Mar 2023); try both and ask for the address, times and price. The 2021 profile says it runs from their home. No phone, website or street address is published and it is not on Google Maps.
  • No Jewish supermarket was found online as of Nov 2026: buy from Denet Gıda (Levent; Fri closes 12:00), the kosher butchers (Şişli, Ulus) or order catering from La Casa before Friday midday. Caffe Eden closes 15:00 Friday and all Shabbat; check what is open before you rely on it. TotallyJewishTravel also lists Birkat Yosef (Grand Star Hotel, Siraselviler Cd. 45, Taksim) under the Rabbinic Council; it is not on Google Places or the community list as of Nov 2026, so call before going.
  • Istanbul Airport (IST) has a kosher vending machine (sandwiches, drinks, cakes) under the Chief Rabbi, hot kosher meals in business lounges from La Casa, and three prayer rooms (JPost, 2022). Order Turkish Airlines kosher meals in advance. Allow about 50 min by taxi to Şişli.
  • Eruv: none known, so do not carry on Shabbat. Synagogues are heavily guarded after the 1986 and 2003 attacks, so arrive early with ID. Keep some Turkish lira cash for taxis and small shops before Shabbat.
  • Hotel keys: Booking.com lists key card access at seven of the eight hotels here (Astan Hotel Galata does not list it), and no hotel was found online as of Nov 2026 stating a Shabbat key or Shabbat-mode lift (checked Booking.com facility lists and Q&A, TripAdvisor, Google reviews and TotallyJewishTravel). Email before booking and ask for a mechanical key and a Shabbat lift setting; Art Nouveau Galata has no lift at all (TripAdvisor, Jun 2024), so expect stairs on a steep hill.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Neve Shalom Synagogue mikvah (Büyük Hendek Cd. 34): community site says it closed in Nov 2021; mikvah.org still lists it. Use the Şişli mikve instead.

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
