Izaak (Isaac Jakubowicz) Synagogue - status contested, confirm before going

Kupa 18, 31-057 Krakow
Orthodox

Minyan: Regular minyan not confirmed: Times: call. Evidence conflicts. Chabad was locked out in July 2019 and a Krakow court then ordered the synagogue returned to Chabad as tenant before Rosh Hashanah that year (lubavitch.com, undated page). Wikipedia calls it an active Orthodox synagogue (photo dated 2025) and Chabad Poland's older contact page (chabad.org.pl/kontakt) still lists Chabad Krakow at Kupa 18. A Google reviewer (undated) listed daily tefillot here during renovation: Shacharit 8:15 Mon/Thu and 8:30 other days, Mincha about 30 min before sunset, Maariv 20:00 in winter. Against that, chabadkrakow.org (read Nov 2026) gives services only at Sw. Sebastiana 23 and VIP Transfers calls Izaak mainly a museum that sometimes arranges a minyan for groups

What locals would tell you

  • Stay in Kazimierz: Remuh (Szeroka 40) is where the Jewish Community prays and the Chabad House (Sw. Sebastiana 23) is about 0.5 km away. Hotel Eden (Ciemna 15) has a mikvah, kosher breakfast on request and (Booking.com Q&A) metal keys; Kosher Traveling lists a 'Shabbat key' in every Holiday Inn room. Guests report metal or physical keys at Hotel Kazimierz I and Hotel Alef, and key cards only at Rubinstein and Metropolitan. Ask every hotel about keys and elevators.
  • Shabbat meals need advance registration: Hachnosas Orchim / Ohel Avraham at Szeroka 39 (WhatsApp +1 845 421 1773 or +48 690 321 587; EUR 75 per meal or EUR 225 for all three incl. Seudah Shlishit per koshermeal.net), Chabad of Krakow (+48 12 430 22 22; Friday night and Saturday day, no Seudah Shlishit; meals were 16:51 Fri and 12:30 Sat on 6-7 Nov; price not published), Kosher Delight Jozefa 25 (+48 797 721 583, WhatsApp +48 501 741 703; price not published). JCC Krakow (visitors@jcckrakow.org) hosts a community Shabbat dinner (join 2+ weeks ahead) and, per VIP Transfers, delivers glatt meals with a blech to hotels with 7-14 days notice.
  • Friday closing is early: Kosher Delight 13:00, Chabad store 15:00, Cafe Hafuch 15:30, Hachnosas Orchim 16:00 (Google), and Falafel Shelanu is closed Fridays - shop Thursday. Candle lighting was 15:51 on 6 Nov (Shabbat ended 16:58), and the Remuh Friday Mincha was 16:11 the week before. Tourist visits to the synagogues stop 2 hrs early Fridays and everything is closed Saturday.
  • Pray at Remuh (times on the weekly sheet at gwzkrakow.pl/godziny_modlitw/; weekday Shacharit 8:30 per Kosher Traveling) or at Chabad (Shacharit 8:30 daily, 9:00 Shabbat). Chabad Krakow describes Kupa as an active community synagogue but publishes no times, and Tempel is a Progressive and museum venue. Izaak, where Chabad used to pray, is contested (Chabad was locked out in 2019, a court ordered it returned, and Chabad's current site gives only Sw. Sebastiana 23): call before going.
  • Auschwitz is about 70 km away (roughly 1.5 hrs each way): with candle lighting near 16:00 from November, do not book it for Friday - go Thursday or Sunday. Chabad's site has a 'Tours and drivers' page. Cemeteries: Remuh (tourist ticket 15 PLN cash) and the New Jewish Cemetery at Miodowa 55 (Google: 10:00-16:00, closed Saturday).
  • KRK (Balice) to Kazimierz is about 30 min by taxi; no kosher food was confirmed at the airport, so buy sandwiches or snacks from Kosher Delight, Falafel Shelanu or the Chabad store before flying. Local supervision: Chabad (Rabbi Eliezer Gurary), Rabbi Dov Lando of Jerusalem (Kosher Delight) and the Chief Rabbi of Poland (Rabbi Schudrich) for caterers. There is no eruv, so do not carry outside.
  • Kazimierz restaurants called 'Jewish' are not kosher: Chabad says so, and VIP Transfers names Hamsa (Szeroka 2), Olive Tree (Szeroka 8), Klezmer-Hois and Cheder Cafe as uncertified. Ariel and Awiw serve Jewish-style food and are not on any kosher list we read.
  • Not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places, Kosher Traveling and Chabad Krakow's pages): Hotel Polin (Morawica, near KRK), which JTA reported in Dec 2017 as a kosher hotel with Shabbat elevators, and a Grabowski Kosher Bakery named only on a Kosher Traveling 'nearby' list. Ask Chabad Krakow (+48 12 430 22 22) before relying on either.

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
