What locals would tell you

  • Check the eruv every Erev Shabbat at laeruv.com, on 877-ERUV-INFO, or via the WhatsApp status group (text 'first last ERUV' to 424-772-3499); assume it is down in a storm or strong wind.
  • Stay on or just off Pico/Olympic between Robertson and Beverly Dr: B'nai David, Chabad Pico, Beth Jacob, Young Israel of Century City and both mikvaos are all within about 0.8 mi of the Carlyle Inn, Beverly Hills Marriott and Burton House. Young Israel of Century City also lists Cameo Beverly Hills and Avalon Hotel for Shabbat, and its office (310-273-6954) can give a Carlyle Inn discount code. Few hotels were found near the shuls on Google Places as of Nov 2026, so many visitors rent: ask for a mechanical key.
  • Shabbat hosts: Beth Jacob takes a hospitality request form on its Visit page (submit early, reply within a week); B'nai David runs registered community Friday dinners (email hello@bnaidavid.com).
  • Friday shops close early in winter: Shanghai Diamond Garden about 1:30pm; Got Kosher Bakery, Charlie's Deli, Beverly Hills Kosher Meat Market and Schwartz's Marketplace about 2pm (Got Kosher: order by Thursday; Google shows Schwartz's to 3:30pm: confirm); Lenny's Casita 2:30pm; Jeff's Gourmet, Glatt Mart and Pico Glatt Mart about 3pm. Mr. Shiloh's and The Milky Way are closed all day Friday.
  • Local hechsherim: RCC (Rabbinical Council of California, 213-389-3382 per YICC and Beth Jacob's calendar), Kehilla (Pico Glatt Mart) and OK Kosher (Lenny's per its site; Jeff's and Taam Shabbos per OK's restaurant list; Mr. Shiloh's and Schwartz's per Totally Jewish Travel). Sources differ for some places: confirm the certificate on the door.
  • No LA restaurant serves prepaid Shabbat meals on site (Young Israel of Century City's Visiting LA page): it is all take-out. Order ahead from Schwartz's Marketplace (online Shabbat takeout, hotplate rental), Lenny's Shabbat Shuk (pickup or delivery), Jeff's (Shabbos take-out menu), Shanghai Diamond Garden or Beverly Hills Kosher Meat Market (both listed by YICC); Taam Shabbos serves the Hancock Park side. Cut-off times and hotel delivery are not published: call.
  • Hancock Park shuls (Young Israel of Hancock Park, Kehillat Yavneh, Chabad of Hancock Park) are about 2.6-3 mi from Pico-Robertson: no walking between the two areas, so book your hotel near the shul you plan to use. Hotels near Young Israel of Hancock Park: Park Plaza Lodge (about 0.4 mi, stairs only, no elevator) and The Beverly Grove Hotel (about 0.45 mi, studios with kitchens); neither states a Shabbat key.
  • Friday Mincha moves earlier week by week in November (Beth Jacob 4:45pm Nov 6, 4:40 Nov 13, 4:35 Nov 20; clocks changed Nov 1): check each shul's page the week you travel.
  • Keys and elevators: Booking.com says all rooms at the Carlyle Inn use magnetic keys and lists key-card access at the Marriott, Cameo, Park Plaza Lodge and Beverly Grove; no hotel here states a mechanical key, so ask the desk before booking and again on arrival.
  • Shabbat take-out prices found online: Jeff's Shabbos menu (about $19 per 1/2 lb for pastrami, roast beef or BBQ beef; salad bowls $45-70) and Got Kosher challah (from about $8-9 each, order by Thursday); Schwartz's Marketplace, Lenny's Shuk and Taam Shabbos do not show prices readably, so call for a quote.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Pat's Restaurant (9233 W Pico): closed. Google Maps now shows the address as 'Pats Cafe' and as L'Carve, and a review describes L'Carve as being in 'the space formerly occupied by the legendary Pat's'; L'Carve (424-421-7287) is listed under food. · Pico Kosher Deli (8826 W Pico, was 310-273-9381): not found online as of Nov 2026 (name and address searches on Google Maps return no listing there; an earlier review said it was shut for weeks without notice).
