• Chabad Lugano's own Visitors Info page states: 'There are no kosher restaurants, kosher hotels or Delis in Lugano' (jewishlugano.com/689064, read 2 Nov 2026; the page gives no date). Google Places searches in English and Italian also found no kosher outlet. Ask Chabad for the free Friday-night dinner at the rabbi's home well ahead: +41 91 921 37 20 or jewishlugano.com/tools/feedback.asp. Kiddush follows Shabbat Shacharit at the shul.
• Bring or buy Shabbat food before you cross into Switzerland. Milan is about an hour away: Kosher Paradise (Viale San Gimignano 13, Fri 08:30-13:00, closed Sat), Eretz Kosher Market and Tuv Taam bakery (Via Soderini 27), Chabad Milan WhatsApp +39 320 633 9082 for Shabbat meals to go. Check Swiss customs limits on imported meat. No source shows Denzel, Eshel or Kosher Paradise delivering to Lugano, so plan to pick up in Milan.
• Chabad Lugano also supplies frozen kosher chicken and meat (call ahead). Shabbat Shacharit is 9:30; most of the year there is no weekday Shacharit (usually Tue Mincha/Maariv), and a daily minyan runs in summer with yeshiva bochurim. Confirm Friday-night times by phone or email before you travel. A 2015 press report says the Via Maderno shul often stands empty and the rabbi sometimes holds services elsewhere, so confirm the venue too.
• Season: older guides describe a Lugano summer scene with two kosher hotels, but none is listed today (Chabad Lugano's page says there are no kosher hotels) and every hotel below is non-kosher or unconfirmed, with no published Shabbat arrangements, so ask about key cards and elevators when booking. Winter Shabbat starts early (candle lighting 16:45 on 6 Nov 2026).
• Hotel keys: Booking.com data (2026) shows key-card systems at LuganoDante, Walter au Lac and Federale, and conflicts for Pestalozzi and Villa Sassa; Acquarello lists a metal key (unconfirmed). No hotel or guest review mentions a Shabbat elevator or manual key, so ask in writing before booking and be ready to use the stairs.
• Stay within walking distance of Via Maderno; the hotels near Piazza Indipendenza are closest, and the station area is downhill and steep with luggage. Arrive Thursday or early Friday: MXP is about 1 hour by road, public transport 1.5-3 h, LUG (Agno) has few flights, and ID is needed at the border. Swiss shops close early and are mostly shut Sunday, so shop Friday morning.
