Eruv

Eruv: unknown

Not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google, Chabad Uruguay and Spanish searches): no eruv is mentioned on the Chabad Uruguay pages read (Punta del Este, Sinagogas, mikve, Donde Estamos, home page; 1 Nov 2026), on TotallyJewishTravel's 2026 Montevideo guide, or in any source found for Montevideo or the Punta del Este summer season. Treat both as no-carry on Shabbat unless Beit Jabad confirms; ask by phone before travelling.

Minyan: Times: call. TotallyJewishTravel lists it as Orthodox (Dati-Leumi) at Cavia 2800, with no times or phone. Google reviewers say 'Modern Orthodox, two daily services' and 'Kosher and orthodox synagogue'; Mishpacha (Nov 2016) describes an active Orthodox kehillah at the Yavne school with Mincha and Maariv. An undated CJN article says the Yavne campus has a school, a synagogue, a kosher bakery and a gift shop. Google office hours Mon-Fri 08:00-16:00. Sephardic

Minyan: Times: call. Google shows it open Fri 19:00-21:00 and Sat 10:00-12:30 (opening hours, not a confirmed service schedule). A reviewer praises the Shabbat service led by 'the Chief Rabbi of the Kehila, Max Godet'. Ohr Torah Stone's site (Sept 2020) names Rabbi Max Godet, one of its emissaries, as chief rabbi of Uruguay and rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, so the Shabbat service is likely Orthodox-led; the Sephardic community's own Orthodox status is still not stated on any page read. The community's centre, Centro Maimonides, is at 21 de Setiembre 3111

Orthodox

Minyan: Times: call. Wikipedia: the community synagogue (nusach Ashkenaz) worked from a Centro building until 2024 and now sits in Punta Carretas. Google office hours Mon-Thu 09:00-16:00, Fri 09:00-15:00. Ohr Torah Stone's site (Sept 2020) says its emissary Rabbi Max Godet is chief rabbi of Uruguay and rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, and a Google reviewer calls him 'Chief Rabbi of the Kehila', so Orthodox leadership is likely but no page read states the shul's status. An undated CJN article describes the Kehila centre as housing a synagogue, a mikveh, a museum and schools. Its rabbinate supervises caterers (2019 ad)

What locals would tell you

  • Stay in Pocitos / Punta Carretas. Hotel Montevideo is closest to Or Israel (2 min), Yavne (6) and Beit Jabad (9); Armon, Dazzler and Aloft are 4-6 min from the Kehila and Templo Sefaradi (the Sheraton is 6 min from the Kehila). No hotel states a Shabbat elevator, mechanical key or kosher breakfast (Booking.com Q&A, TripAdvisor and Google reviews checked in Nov 2026 found none; most list key cards), so write ahead and ask for a low floor. Armon is the only one a guest review calls Jewish. Walk times are estimates from coordinates.
  • Shabbat meals: no public prepaid Shabbat-meal programme was found online as of Nov 2026 on jabad.org.uy, the Kehila, Yavne or TotallyJewishTravel. Message Beit Jabad (+598 2709 0405, form at jabad.org.uy/tools/feedback.asp, Spanish) about hospitality before you travel, and order from 613 Kosher Minimarket (Roque Graseras 688; TJT lists delivery). Shops and cafes close early on Friday (Blanca Café and Hamfer 16:30), so buy by Friday noon.
  • Budget option with a kosher cluster: Hotel Gema (Roque Graseras 644, TJT 'Jewish Observant Friendly') is next to 613 Kosher Minimarket and the Mei Esther mikvah (both listed at Roque Graseras 688), and the Or Israel Charedi shul (José Ellauri 1028) is about 15 min away. Shabbat service times for the Montevideo shuls were not found online as of Nov 2026, so phone or message each one on Thursday.
  • Punta del Este is a separate summer base (high season Dec-Feb; Forbes Argentina, Jan 2026, says one kosher-menu restaurant there earns most of its revenue from late November to February). Three shuls run in season (Ajdut Israel, the Chabad shul, Kabalat Shabat about 20:10 and Shajarit 10:00 with cholent; Beit Yaacov, Sephardic, 20:15 and 9:30; Templo Rafael 20:15 and 9:30) per an undated Chabad Uruguay page. The shuls, kosher places and hotels there all fall outside the Montevideo walk rings; Shelton is 2 min from Beit Yaacov and Barradas Parque 12 min from the Chabad shul.
  • Coming from Buenos Aires: the direct ferry takes about 2 h 30 from Puerto Madero and docks at the Terminal Fluvial in Ciudad Vieja; Ferryhopper says it sails twice a day, so confirm the timetable. Book a sailing that lands well before candle lighting, allow for the taxi to Pocitos, and check candle-lighting on jabad.org.uy (Encendido de Velas). Do not travel on Shabbat.
  • Security and language: Jewish institutions in the region are guarded (Mishpacha, 2016), so carry a passport or ID and message ahead; the Chabad pages, phones and signage are in Spanish. Mikve Mei Menujot (José Ellauri 1270, the Beit Jabad block) books by phone (Veronica 096 969 962, Hanna 099 682 273, info line 2628 6770 until 16:00); Mei Esther mikvah (Roque Graseras 688) is by appointment only, several days ahead.
  • Hechsherim: Kosher Uruguay (Lorenzo Justiniano Pérez 3181, +598 94 916 314) certifies Conaprole dairy per foodie magazine; Beit Jabad's Rabbi Eliezer Shemtov supervises kosher chicken at Devoto, Disco, Macromercado and Geant (2019 ad); the Rabinato de la Kehila supervises caterers; Or Israel Yeshiva (Rabbi A. Milstein) supervises 613 Kosher Punta. No certificate was found for Blanca Café, Sushi & Pizza Rafael or Shark Club. An eruv was not found online as of Nov 2026, and no kosher option at MVD turned up (Google reviews list only McDonald's, Starbucks and a dining area), so bring food.
  • Checked and not listed (Nov 2026): Vaad Ha'ir (Centro) is listed active by Wikipedia but Mishpacha (2016) says it held no High Holiday services, and the Kehila moved to Punta Carretas in 2024. Adat Israel in Montevideo: no such shul found (Ajdut Israel is Chabad's Punta del Este shul, listed above). The New Congregation of Israel (Cipriano Payan 3030, Pocitos) is Masorti per Google reviewers (one adds 'modern and reformist'), who mention Kabalat Shabat and Shacharit on Saturdays. Jabad Rambla (Rambla Republica del Peru 1483, 1st floor): only an old Chabad page (events 2009-2015) was found and no minyan is confirmed, so ask Beit Jabad on +598 2709 0405. The Satmar shul and the Brecha Street shul named by Mishpacha (2016) were described as disused or unconfirmed and did not turn up online. Simja cafe (Luis Franzini 824; closed Saturdays) and Nurr (Gabriel Pereira 3179) appear in kosher-flavoured searches but no hechsher was found; 613 Bakery (Av. Brasil 2852) makes no kosher claim and Google has no pin for 613 Kosher Minimarket. A 'Kosher Center' in Montevideo was not found (the only Google match is in San Jose, Costa Rica), and the only Beit Jabad Punta del Este food on Chabad's pages is the Ahavat Jinam dinners and Kidush with cholent. Hotels not used: ibis Montevideo Rambla (La Cumparsita 1473) and After Hotel (Buceo) are beyond walking distance of any shul, Regency Rambla (Carrasco) is too far (Regency Way in Pocitos is a different property and is listed), and Awa Boutique, Las Cumbres and a 'destino26 hostel' listed by TotallyJewishTravel could not be verified. 'Montevideo Shul - Ohel Avraham' pages are a Paris synagogue on rue Montevideo, not Uruguay.
