Eruv

Eruv: yes

The Pittsburgh Eruv (about 6.7 sq mi: Squirrel Hill, Greenfield, Regent Square, Bloomfield and Oakland, reaching CMU, Pitt, Carlow, Chatham and the main hospitals) has been supervised by Rabbi Shimon Silver of Young Israel since 1990 and is walked weekly by volunteers (2022 nextpittsburgh.com article). The Vaad Harabonim posts the weekly status and a Google My Maps boundary map at vaadpgh.org/eruv/status-map; on 2 Nov 2026 it still read 'inspected, repaired and KOSHER for Shabbos Vayeira 5787' (last Shabbat), so re-check Thursday or Friday for Chayei Sara on 7 Nov. The page says boundary streets have strings and poles on either side; anyone walking along them should contact Rabbi Silver. Questions: office@vaadpgh.org; an earlier listing gave the Pittsburgh Eruv line 412-421-1437 (Vaad office number). Weekly status ↗

What locals would tell you

  • Where to stay: Visit Pittsburgh says there are no hotels inside Squirrel Hill, and Google Places searches on 2 Nov 2026 found none in 15217 either. For a Shabbat you can walk, book a short-term rental on or near Murray Ave (Booking.com lists units at 2320 Sherbrook St beside Shaare Torah and a house on Imperial St near Poale Zedeck) or ask Chabad of Squirrel Hill or Bikur Cholim about host families. The Oakland hotels are about 2 miles from the Squirrel Hill shuls (45-60 min on foot); only Chabad at Pitt is close to them. The Poale Zedeck hospitality page also says there are no hotels near the shuls and links achdus.com/airbnb ('Lodgings within the Eruv': nine Airbnb listings on Shady Ave, Bartlett St, Wightman St, Douglas St and others, with the shuls each is near). PZ takes Shabbat host and meal requests at miriam@pzonline.org or WhatsApp 412-421-9786.
  • UPMC visitors: Bikur Cholim of Pittsburgh (bikurcholimofpittsburgh.org) arranges kosher meals delivered to the hospital or your lodging, home hospitality and airport rides. It lists the Residence Inn (3341 Forbes Ave) and Hilton Garden Inn (3454 Forbes Ave) as about 5 min on foot from the hospital, says neither kitchen nor breakfast there is kosher, and mentions Family House in Shadyside (412-647-7777), where very little of the shared kitchen is kosher.
  • Shabbat meals and Friday closing: the Achdus community directory lists Shabbox (2118 Murray Ave, 'weekly Shabbos meal ordering') and Creative Kosher (Shabbos and Yom Tov meals), both on Google at 412-901-1729; no menu, price or deadline is published, so call early in the week. Chabad of Squirrel Hill runs a Community Shabbat Dinner (RSVP on chabadpgh.com), and a Google review of Shaare Torah describes a weekly invitation to the rabbi's home for kiddush and lunch; call the shul office ahead. Cafe Eighteen is closed Fri and Sat. On Fridays Murray Ave Kosher closes 3 PM, Milky Way and Elegant Edge 2 PM, Bunny Bakes 2:30 PM (Google); clocks went back on 1 Nov and candle lighting on 6 Nov is 4:53 PM, so shop Thursday (Murray Ave Kosher open to 8 PM).
  • Security and access: the 2018 Tree of Life attack was in Squirrel Hill and shuls keep doors locked. A Google review of Shaare Torah mentions an armed guard at the front door, one of Poale Zedeck says to get the door code from a regular before you arrive, and Cafe Eighteen needs a doorbell ring. Call or email a shul before Shabbat so someone expects you.
  • Walking and hills: Squirrel Hill is hilly, but the Murray Ave area is compact. Shaare Torah, the Kollel, Lubavitch Center, Poale Zedeck and Young Israel are all within about 0.4 mile of each other (straight-line); Chabad of Squirrel Hill (Beechwood Blvd) is about 0.6 mile from Shaare Torah and B'nai Emunoh (Greenfield) about 0.8 mile south.
  • Hechsherim and airport: the Vaad Harabonim of Greater Pittsburgh (5804 Beacon St, office@vaadpgh.org, list at vaadpgh.org/kashrus/our-establishments) certifies the local places; check its Cholov Yisroel / Pas Yisroel notes, since Rita's, the JCC cafe and the ice-cream shops are Cholov Stam. Not found online as of Nov 2026: a kosher outlet at PIT (checked Google Places and the Vaad list), so buy food in Squirrel Hill before you fly (about 35 min by taxi). Pigeon Bagels and the Giant Eagle bakery are open on Saturday per Google, so neither is shomer Shabbos; the Vaad certifies Giant Eagle bakery products only when they carry the VHP symbol.
  • Not listed because unconfirmed (not because closed): Hamsah (kosher restaurant that opened in 2019 per a Jewish Chronicle letter) is not on the current Vaad list and not found on Google as of Nov 2026; ask the Vaad Harabonim (office@vaadpgh.org). Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin' at 5889 Forbes Ave were Vaad-certified per a 2020 Chronicle/Trib article but are absent from the current Vaad establishment page; Google shows Baskin-Robbins open there, and the Achdus directory lists a Baskin Robbins as Kef Cholov Yisroel at 5831 Forbes Ave (412-244-7844), so confirm the certificate in the shop and do not count on either for Shabbat. Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center has only a Google listing with no hours or reviews and no Booking.com inventory; the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh University Center (100 Lytton Ave) appears to be what operates there. Tartan Express (added above) is not on the Vaad list.
