Eruv

Eruv: yes

A Copacabana and Ipanema eruv was built by Kolel Rio and certified in April 2014 by Rabbi Shmuel Havlin of Sao Paulo; it runs along the coast from north Copacabana to Av. Epitacio Pessoa and about a mile inland. Last confirmed in 2014. Rechecked Nov 2026: kolelrio.com.br and beitlubavitchrio.org (Leblon) open but carry no eruv page or status, and the 2014 report names Copacabana and Ipanema, not Leblon, so ask Chabad or Kolel Rio before carrying. Chabad Copacabana's eruv page (maayan.rio/eruv, read Nov 2026) shows 'Situacao Eruv RJ' as 'Not yet confirmed' with no update date or boundaries, and tells visitors to check it close to each Shabbat and not rely on the eruv without qualified guidance. What locals would tell you

  • Where to stay: Copacabana has the densest cluster, with Beit Lubavitch Copacabana (Rua Maranaú), Kehilat Yaacov, Templo Beth El, Kosher Place and Shaq Shuq all within about 1 km of each other. In Ipanema the Safra synagogue is the walkable option. In Leblon, Beit Lubavitch Rio lists 19 hotels within walking distance on its Accommodation page, the closest about 60 m away. Beit Lubavitch Copacabana's own hotel list (21 properties, walking times from Rua Maranaú 11) has Aera/Nobile 2 min, Copacabana Palace 6, Arena and Windsor Excelsior 10, Hilton 15 and JW Marriott 20, and states no Shabbat arrangement for any. No hotel was confirmed with a Shabbat key or elevator, so ask when booking.
  • Shabbat meals: Beit Lubavitch Leblon sells a Shabbat-to-go meal at US$50 per person; call or WhatsApp +55 21 97887-6734 by Wednesday (a week ahead is better) and pick up Friday by 15:00. Its home-hosted meals are free, donations welcome. At Beit Lubavitch Copacabana the site lists Kabbalat Shabbat 18:30, dinner 19:00 and Shabbat lunch 12:15; reserve at maayan.rio/shabat or by WhatsApp +55 21 96668-2603 (no price is published, and reviewers say dinner runs in two sittings, so ask which one you get). Chabad expected about 500 extra people each Shabbat during the 2016 Olympics, so book early around big events such as Carnival.
  • Friday closing: Kosher Place, Kosher Rio and Beit Lubavitch Leblon's Shabbat pickup close at 15:00, Sushinharia 15:30, Padoka and Adar Kosher 16:00; Kosher Place is also closed Sunday. Shaq Shuq is closed all Friday and reopens Saturday night. Buy Shabbat food Thursday or Friday morning.
  • Eruv: a 2014 eruv covers Copacabana and Ipanema (Kolel Rio, certified by Rabbi Havlin) but no current status page was found, and neither kolelrio.com.br nor beitlubavitchrio.org carries one; ask Chabad or Kolel Rio before carrying. Chabad Copacabana's maayan.rio/eruv page showed 'Not yet confirmed' in Nov 2026, so check it before each Shabbat.
  • Security and registration: Beit Lubavitch Leblon asks visitors to email or WhatsApp a passport copy and their own rabbi's phone a week before arriving. Expect guards and ID checks elsewhere too: a reviewer at Beit Lubavitch Copacabana noted security staff throughout a holiday meal, and a reviewer was refused entry at Templo Beth El on Shabbat over a guest list, so phone ahead and carry ID. Beit Lubavitch Copacabana wants ID details through the secure form on maayan.rio, not by email or WhatsApp. I found no published advice on wearing a kippah on the street, so ask your host. A 2018 AMI Magazine writer warns that daytime armed robberies at traffic lights are common.
  • Airport and language: No kosher food at GIG turned up online as of Nov 2026, so carry food (taxi to Copacabana is about 45 minutes). Hechsherim here are local (Chabad, Rabbanut/Rabinato do Rio), so ask which one a place uses; Beit Lubavitch Rio points to buskasher.com.br for supermarket products. Useful Portuguese: "Tem comida kasher?" (any kosher food?), "Onde fica a sinagoga?" (where is the synagogue?), "Preciso de uma refeição de Shabat." (I need a Shabbat meal).
  • Mikvah: the women's mikvah at Beit Lubavitch Leblon works by appointment only; call Dona Anete Mon-Thu, Rabanit Chani Goldman for Friday, Sra. Margareth Aizin for Saturday night and Sunday (numbers in the listing). Kehilat Yaacov and Templo União Israel are on mikvah.org with no hours.
  • Hotel keys and lifts: no review, Booking.com Q&A or forum post found for any of the 11 hotels mentions a Shabbat key or Shabbat elevator. Booking.com lists key-card access for Aera, Arena, Copacabana Palace, Promenade Palladium and Windsor Excelsior, which does not rule out a manual key, so email before booking and ask for a mechanical or staff-held key and a low floor. Sol Ipanema (2 lifts for 15 floors) and Janeiro (slow service lifts) draw lift complaints.
  • Other shuls found (Nov 2026): Templo Sidon (Tijuca) and Sinagoga Guemilut Hassadim (Botafogo) are listed with Google data only; their Orthodox status and service times are unconfirmed, so phone before going. Templo Sidon is in Tijuca, about 7 km from Copacabana.
  • Checked and not listed (Nov 2026): Best Western Eretz Copacabana (a 2015 plan for a kosher hotel with a Chabad shul and kosher restaurant, aimed at the 2016 Olympics) was not found online, so its existence is unconfirmed. Windsor Atlantica did not appear in Google Places, and the TripAdvisor lookup returned Windsor Leme; Windsor Excelsior (Av. Atlantica 1800) is on Beit Lubavitch Copacabana's hotel list and is listed above, while Windsor Palace (Rua Domingos Ferreira 6 per Google and Booking.com) appears on bookasher.com's Chabad page with a different address (Rua Barata Ribeiro 231), so it is not listed; no Windsor hotel shows Shabbat facilities. Grande Templo Israelita (Rua Tenente Possolo 8, Centro) is a landmark that Google shows gated; its Orthodox status and Shabbat services are unconfirmed, so it is not listed. Congregacao Judaica do Brasil (Barra) is described by JTA as Conservative, so it is not listed as Orthodox. A Beit Lubavitch in Ipanema was not found online; the Chabad centre on that side of town is Beit Lubavitch Leblon (+55 21 3543-3770). Gutessen Culinaria Judaica (Humaita) is a Jewish deli with no kosher certificate stated, and Falafel & Cia, Hafiza Arabe and Basha are open Saturday with no kosher certificate found, so none are listed. Delicias Kosher and a separate Chabad restaurant were not found online; Kosher Rio Food Take Away and Kosher Place are the ones found. A mikvah at Rua General Canabarro 454 (Maracana) is listed by TotallyJewishTravel with an address only and no phone, hours or confirmation, so it is not listed; ask the Beit Lubavitch Leblon mikvah line.

Have it arranged: hotel confirmed, meals, driver →
