Eruv

Eruv: partial

La Jolla eruv (erected and kept by Adat Yeshurun) is bounded by La Jolla Village Dr on the north (only its south side is safely in), I-5 east, La Jolla Pkwy south and Torrey Pines Rd west (both roads outside); per the shul's boundary map and hotel list, Residence Inn and Sheraton La Jolla are inside, Ralphs (Village Square) is inside, and University City/Governor Dr (Chabad UC), Hyatt Aventine, Marriott, Embassy Suites, Hotel La Jolla, Hilton Torrey Pines and Estancia are outside. Volunteers check it weekly before Shabbat: result is on the Adat Yeshurun homepage ('The Eruv is up for Shabbat Vayera', Nov 1, 2026) and by phone at the shul office 858-535-1196 on Friday afternoon; report a break to eruv@adatyeshurun.org. Separate College Area Eruv (Beth Jacob area) posts 'up and operational' on bjsd.org/sderuv (updated Oct 29, 2026; collegeareaeruv@gmail.com, 619-287-9890); none was found online as of Nov 2026 in Downtown or Pacific Beach, and Young Israel's site says its eruv 'is not up yet'. University City (Governor Dr, Chabad UC) is outside the La Jolla eruv, but Chabad UC ran its own 'UC Eruv' project (UC Community Association article, Nov 2015, universitycitynews.org/?p=6434); its current status was not found online, so ask Chabad UC on 858-455-1670 before relying on it. What locals would tell you

  • Stay at the Residence Inn (15-min walk) or Sheraton La Jolla (20-min walk) if you want Adat Yeshurun inside the eruv; the shul's page says the Hyatt Aventine, Marriott, Embassy Suites, Hotel La Jolla and Hilton Torrey Pines are outside it. Adat Yeshurun requires online visitor registration before you attend; call Beth Jacob and Young Israel ahead (reviewers report gated doors and a hard-to-find entrance).
  • Friday is tight in winter: candle lighting is about 4:35 PM (Nov 6) and Shabbat ends about 5:31-5:36 PM. Shops close early (Mega Glatt Mart and HaMitbach 3 PM, La Mesa Pizza Works 2-3:30 PM), and The Place's office is closed Fri-Sun, so order by Thursday.
  • Shabbat meals: Chabad of Downtown sells prepaid dinner ($55) and lunch ($35) online; The Place Catering (858-549-7000) and the Ralphs Kosher Experience deli (858-597-1550) do Shabbat take-out; Beth Jacob runs a Chesed WhatsApp host group, Young Israel a hospitality committee (YISDrabbi@gmail.com), and Adat Yeshurun hospitality goes through the shul office. No hotel delivery is advertised, so ask when ordering.
  • San Diego is car country: La Jolla/UC, the College Area (Beth Jacob), Del Cerro (Young Israel) and Downtown are 10-15 miles apart, so pick one area for Shabbat and do not plan to walk between them. Shabbat observers should choose a hotel near one shul rather than rely on a taxi. A kosher outlet at SAN was not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked local lists), so buy food in town (Ralphs Kosher Experience, Mega Glatt, Meats and Eats) before flying or checking in.
  • UCSD: Chabad Jewish Student Life at UCSD and Hillel serve students; the Star-K Spice Kosher Restaurant at 9788 Scholars Dr N, La Jolla (858-534-4924, per Adat Yeshurun's list, Nov 2026) is on campus, term-time only, hours not confirmed. Chabad UC (Governor Dr) is the closest Chabad to campus but sits outside the La Jolla eruv (it has run its own UC Eruv project; ask it on 858-455-1670 whether that eruv is currently up).
  • Tijuana: Chabad without Borders (Rabbi Polichenco's team; same 619-726-4645 as Chabad Carmel Valley) is listed at 1548 Bedford Ave, Chula Vista, chabadwithoutborders.com; the directory gives no Shabbat or Tijuana times, so call before any visit and do not cross into Shabbat.
  • Eruv: the La Jolla eruv ends at La Jolla Village Dr (only its south side is safely in), I-5, La Jolla Pkwy and Torrey Pines Rd, so University City, Chabad UC and the Hyatt are outside it (Chabad UC has its own UC Eruv project; confirm its status on 858-455-1670). Check status on the Adat Yeshurun homepage or call 858-535-1196 on Friday afternoon; report a break to eruv@adatyeshurun.org.
  • Other hotel lists (no Shabbat key or elevator details given): Chabad Carmel Valley lists Marriott Del Mar 858-523-1700, DoubleTree Del Mar 858-481-5900, Hampton Inn Del Mar 858-792-5557, Residence Inn Del Mar 858-481-8800 and Fairmont Grand Del Mar 858-314-2000; Chabad PB lists Catamaran, Paradise Point, Bahia, Pacific Terrace, The Wayfarer and Surfer Beach hotels. Ask any hotel about a manual key before booking.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Lang's Bakery is open (1375 Fayette St, El Cajon, 619-280-5264, Mon-Fri 8-4:30 per Google; acquired by PF Bakeries) but is not on the current Adat Yeshurun, Chabad PB, Chabad La Jolla or Chabad Carmel Valley kosher lists, so its kosher status is unconfirmed. Shmoozers, Kosher Food Mart and Western Kosher: not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places and those four lists); ask Adat Yeshurun on 858-535-1196. · Ohr Shalom Synagogue (2512 Third Ave, 619-231-1456): Google reviews describe a mix of traditional and modern services; no Orthodox Sephardic minyan or times were found online as of Nov 2026, so it is not listed; call to ask. · The Place (College Area restaurant): now listed only as a caterer (Pomerado Rd), not a sit-down restaurant · Chabad of Scripps Ranch (858-547-0076; Fri 6:30 PM, Shabbat 10:00 AM per chabaddiego.com) is outside the hub and not listed · Moishe's Pizza hours conflict across sources (alternating Thursdays 4-7 PM vs Sun-Thu 3-9 PM); call 619-817-5914 before going · Mission Bagel: Adat Yeshurun's Nov 2026 list shows a food truck at 1608 Grand Ave and a storefront at '1344 Grand Ave' (likely Garnet Ave); Google shows the shop at 1344 Garnet Ave, Mon-Fri 6 AM-2 PM, closed Sat
