What locals would tell you

  • Where to stay: Higienópolis has most shuls (Mekor Haim, Beit Yaacov, Knesset Israel, Tiferet Lubavitch, Chai Menachem) and the kosher shops and restaurants on Alameda Barros and Praça Vilaboim. Jardins hotels (WZ, Astron Garden, Regent Park, Fasano) are 4 to 10 min from Beit Chabad Central but have few kosher options. The two areas are about 3.5 km apart, so pick one and stay put for Shabbat.
  • Eruv: BDK runs the Eruv SP across Jardins, Higienópolis and other areas. Check https://bdk.com.br/eruv/1 before Shabbat, sign up for alerts at eruv@bdk.com.br, and confirm on the boundary map (areas A-F) that your hotel is inside.
  • Shabbat meals: no public prepaid booking page found online as of Nov 2026. Phone Beit Chabad Central (+55 11 3081-3081) or Mekor Haim (+55 11 3660-0400) early in the week, and ask caterer Hannah Gastronomia (+55 11 99852-5735) about delivery. Beit Chabad Itaim (+55 11 3066-0999, Av. Europa 913) has a reviewer recommending it for Shabbat but is across town from Higienópolis.
  • Friday closing: Livenn and Or close at 14:00, Matok and Miki at 14:30, Pinati, Papaia and Casa Mazal Tov at 15:00, All Kosher at 16:30. Several places reopen Saturday evening (Google shows 19:00 to 20:00). Buy challah and Shabbat food Thursday or Friday morning.
  • Security: shuls vet visitors. Beit Yaacov, Ohel Yaacov and the Reform CIP require advance clearance per reviewers, and a Chai Menachem guard turned away a Chabad rabbi who arrived at nightfall without time for the check. Contact the shul beforehand, carry your passport and do not photograph exteriors.
  • Hechsherim, mikvah and logistics: BDK (Beit Din Kashrut, bdk.com.br) certifies products, sweets and shops (Zil Bakery, Macolet Kosher Foods) and runs the eruv. Restaurants are supervised by rabbis or congregations: Congregation Beit Yaakov (Papaia, Mocha Bleu inside Urbanic, Viena), Rav Shamai Ende (Miki), Rabino Isaac Dichi (Matok); All Kosher lists the Beis Din of São Paulo. Gelato Borelli (Praça Vilaboim 31) is BDK-certified but open Saturday. Several shops show no certificate online, so ask to see it. Mikvah: book Maayanei Esther through Beit Chabad Central (+55 11 3081-3081) or Mikve Pompeia (+55 11 3796-7100, by appointment). No kosher counter at GRU turned up online as of Nov 2026, so pack food. Friday-afternoon traffic is heavy, so allow extra time for the airport transfer. Few staff speak English; 'kasher' and 'kosher' are both used.
  • Minyan times: only Chai Menachem (R. Conselheiro Brotero 932) publishes its schedule online (Friday Kabbalat Shabbat 18:30, Shabbat Shacharit 9:30, per its site, Nov 2026). No times were found online for the other shuls as of Nov 2026 (several of their sites refuse automated reads), so phone or ask at the door and confirm Friday Mincha, which follows sunset.
  • Hotel keys and lifts: Booking.com lists key-card access at Regent Park and INNSiDE, and neither Booking.com Q&A nor TripAdvisor and Google reviews mention a Shabbat key or elevator at any listed hotel. Ask in writing before booking for a physical key, a low-floor room and the Saturday check-out rule.
  • More shuls found (Nov 2026): Iavne (R. Padre João Manuel 727), Kehilat Mizrachi (R. Dr. Gabriel dos Santos 143), Congregação Mount Sinai (R. Piauí 624) and Kehilat Eitz Chaim (R. Dr. Veiga Filho 404) are listed with Google or TotallyJewishTravel data only. Mount Sinai and Eitz Chaim have no stated affiliation, so phone before relying on any of the four.
  • Checked and not listed (Nov 2026): 'Rua Chabad 60' was not found online as an address for Beit Chabad Central, which is at R. Dr. Melo Alves 580 (+55 11 3081-3081). Congregação Israelita Paulista is Reform and so excluded. Casa Zilanna (R. Itambé 506) shows Saturday opening hours on Google and no kosher supervision was found. KEZ Padaria, Padavi Boulangerie and Z Deli are open Saturday and serve non-kosher food; Mazon Gastronomia (Alameda Barros 662) shows Saturday 07:00-23:00 on Google and no source states its kosher status. Cantina Kosher, Kosher House, Kosher Mania and a Mazal Tov restaurant were not found in São Paulo (the Adar Kosher found is in Rio de Janeiro). Hotels not within a confirmed 15-minute walk of a shul, or not found: Tivoli Mofarrej (about 1.6 km to Beit Chabad Central), Renaissance (about 1.1 km), Hotel Unique, L'Hotel PortoBay, Mercure and Tryp Higienópolis. Gelato Borelli (Praça Vilaboim 31) is BDK-certified for this unit but open Saturday 11:00-22:30, and the partly kosher BDK ice-cream and chocolate chains (Bacio di Latte, Kopenhagen and others) are not listed. A mikvah 'Congregation Khal' at Rua Mamoré 597 is listed by TotallyJewishTravel with no phone or hours and Google Places could not place it. No hechsher was found for Livenn, Or Gastronomia, Berô Pizza, Hannah Gastronomia or Casa Mazal Tov, and BDK's establishment list does not name them. Beit Menachem (Praça Ernani Braga 111, Alto de Pinheiros; Chabad, Rabbi Zajac) was found with no phone or times and is far from the hub, so ask Beit Chabad Central. Booking.com does not list Astron Garden Special or The Standard Residence, and its Q&A had nothing on Shabbat keys or elevators for any hotel.
