What locals would tell you

  • Stay in Itaewon/Hannam: Chabad Korea lists hotels within walking distance, Mondrian Seoul Itaewon at 1 minute. Booking through the links on chabadkorea.com/en/accommodations/ costs nothing extra and supports Chabad; special Chabad rates can be asked via Kosher Without Borders on WhatsApp.
  • Shabbat meals: Friday-night dinner and Shabbat lunch are at Chabad, by advance reservation at chabadkorea.com/en/shabbat-holidays/ (no prices published; ask on +82 10-7730-3770). The restaurant is closed Fridays and needs 24h notice otherwise, so book early and tell them you are coming: the Shabbat minyan depends on visitors (a visitor in the Canadian Jewish News counted about 12 men).
  • Hotels: Mondrian, Hamilton, Imperial Palace, Nouvelle and Grand Hyatt list key card access on Booking.com, and Booking.com Q&A, TripAdvisor and Google reviews (Nov 2026) show no mechanical key, Shabbat elevator or kosher breakfast at any hotel or hostel checked. Expect key cards, motion-sensor lights and automatic toilets throughout Korea and ask Chabad's rabbi for guidance before Shabbat.
  • Chabad has moved: its own site, Google and its 'New Location' map link all give 29 Jangmun-ro, but Angloinfo, mikvah.org and totallyjewishtravel still show the old address (35-10 Itaewon-ro 49-gil, 744-17 Hannam-dong), about 1 km away. Go to 29 Jangmun-ro and confirm by WhatsApp before Shabbat.
  • Mikvah is by appointment only: WhatsApp +82 10-4929-3770 and ask for the street address, because online listings show Chabad's old centre address and a 2019 Chabad article places the mikvah on a separate property.
  • From ICN: AREX express to Seoul Station takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 (about 8 more from Terminal 2), all-stop 59 minutes, last express leaves ICN 22:48; a taxi to Itaewon is about 70 minutes and Friday traffic is heavy, so aim to land early. Chabad sits near Metro Line 6. A kosher outlet at ICN was not found online as of Nov 2026 (Google lists only ordinary food courts): carry food or pre-order Chabad's delivery.
  • Kosher supply found online is Chabad only (as of Nov 2026; Google Places, Hebrew and English searches): the Chabad restaurant and koreakosher.com; no local kashrut agency was found. Itaewon grocers such as Foreign Food Mart sell imported and halal goods, not certified kosher: read labels. An undated ZenKimchi article says imported kosher foods are sold at Costco, E-Mart, Lotte Mart and Haddon House, but a kosher section or hechsher at these was not found online as of Nov 2026, so none are listed. High Street Market (223 Itaewon-ro, +82 2-790-5450) is a Western grocery with no kosher section found; Time Out marks it closed while Google still lists it (Nov 2026).
  • US military: Jewish services were once centred at Yongsan Garrison and have since moved to Camp Humphreys (Pyeongtaek); the base chapel is closed to civilians. Not an option for most visitors, so use Chabad.
  • Only one Orthodox shul found: Chabad Korea. Another Orthodox minyan in Seoul was not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places in English, Korean and Hebrew, Chabad Korea and Hebrew searches); ask Rabbi Litzman on +82 10-7730-3770 for any private minyan.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Older Chabad House addresses (9-8 Dongbinggo-dong; 744-17 Hannam-dong, also written 35-10 Itaewon-ro 49-gil): still shown by mikvah.org, Angloinfo and totallyjewishtravel. Chabad's site and Google give 29 Jangmun-ro, and its 'New Location' map link resolves to that address. · Yongsan Garrison South Post Chapel Friday 7 pm Jewish service (Army article, 2011): garrison relocated to Camp Humphreys; military access only; not listed.
