What locals would tell you

  • Candle lighting uses the 18-minute offset: Hebcal lists Tiberias candle lighting at 16:22 on Fri 6 Nov 2026 and Havdalah at 17:20 on Sat 7 Nov. Hebcal for Safed (18-minute offset) gives candle lighting of 16:11 on Fri 4 and 11 Dec, 16:13 on 18 Dec and 16:17 on 25 Dec 2026. A Safed custom of lighting 30 minutes before sunset is not universal, and hotels post 18 or 22 minutes: follow the time your hotel or shul posts.
  • Two towns about 20 km apart in a straight line and roughly 40 minutes by road. The map centre is Tiberias; every Safed shul, food place and hotel has its own coordinates and falls outside the Tiberias walk rings. In Safed the Old City is hilly with many steps and hard to park in (reviewers): Ruth Safed, Old City Inn and Ascent are within about 0.5 km of the main shuls, while Villa Galilee and Canaan are about 1.5 km away. Mizpe Hayamim is in Rosh Pina.
  • Where to stay: in Tiberias, the lakefront hotels on Ha-Banim, Hatayelet and Kaplan (Leonardo Plaza and Club, Caesar Premier, Galei Kinneret) are 70-300 m from Etz Chaim and the Chabad Old Synagogue. Hotels' own sites state a kosher kitchen and an on-site synagogue at Leonardo Club and Royal Plaza (south Tiberias, far from the promenade shuls); Gai Beach is said to have both in one Booking.com answer; Leonardo Plaza, Caesar Premier and Lake House on-site synagogues are unconfirmed, so ask. No source states a Shabbat elevator for any hotel, and Booking.com lists key-card access at most Tiberias hotels, so ask for a manual key when booking (Galei Kinneret and Lake House were said to offer one in a Booking.com answer that later queries did not repeat). Saturday check-in is usually after 18:00 (Caesar Premier 16:00, Gai Beach 20:00); a Lake House guest got rooms only about 15:30 on a Friday in Oct 2026, so arrive early or arrange it in advance.
  • Friday closing: Tiberias supermarkets and caterers close around 14:00 and bakeries about 15:30; Safed bakeries and Shufersal close 14:00-15:00. Google lists Safed takeaways open to 16:00-16:30 with no winter variation; in December Safed candle lighting is about 16:11, so a 16:30 close cannot apply and 16:00 leaves almost no margin: shop for Shabbat by early afternoon. Intercity buses stop on Friday afternoon and do not run on Shabbat (general pattern; timetable not checked). Rami Levy in Tiberias and Cafe Monitin in Safed list Saturday trading hours on Google, so do not assume every shop is closed.
  • Shabbat hospitality: Ascent of Safed (2 HaAri St, +972 77-360-1101, ascent@ascentofsafed.com) has a Shabbat Hospitality programme and asks guests to reserve through MyAscent.org or its Facebook page. Chabad of the Old City (+972 4-692-1414) and Chabad of Tiberias (Old Synagogue, +972 54-733-7296) host visitors per reviews, but a published Shabbat-meal booking page for either is not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google, Chabad directory, Hebrew and local searches), so ask by phone (Chabad of Tiberias, Rashi St 7 branch: +972 58-403-9770). Get the meal address in writing: one Ascent guest was sent to a far-away address. Hotel Shabbat meals are stated for Galei Kinneret and Lake House (Booking.com Q&A) and an Erev Shabbat meal with half-board at Caesar Premier.
  • Eruv, kashrut and mikveh: an eruv boundary map or live status for Tiberias or Safed is not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google, Chabad directory, Hebrew and local searches), so confirm before carrying, especially on the Kinneret shore and hotel beaches. Tiberias hotels cite Rabbanut Tiberias (Royal Plaza's site, Galei Kinneret, Lake House, Gai Beach per Booking.com); restaurant reviewers cite Rav Mahfud / Yoreh Deah (Kuzina, Hasenyor), but no certificate was seen: ask to see it. The Rabbi Meir compound looks closed on Shabbat day and the Rambam tomb is open around the clock (Google). Safed's Ari mikveh is for men; for women see the Breslov mikveh on Tsahal St. In Tiberias, the women's listing near Moreshet Yisrael is disputed by one reviewer and the Kalisk mikveh on HaKishon St does not say who it is for: call first.
  • Not confirmed (older guides or listings; not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google, Chabad directory, Hebrew and local searches), so ask before relying): Rami Levy (Tiberias) and Cafe Monitin (Safed, Jerusalem St 70) list Saturday trading on Google; Lueria (HaAri 8), Bashert (Jerusalem 35, run by the Mendi's family per its Hebrew listing) and Bella & Jacqlyn bakery (Arlozorov 2) are closed Friday and Saturday on Google but show no certificate; Leonardo Hotel Tiberias (Gdud Barak St) is listed as 'Rabbanut Rashit' by TotallyJewishTravel with no Shabbat facts. Minyan schedules for Etz Chaim, Shteibelach, the Tiberias Great Synagogue, Ari Ashkenazi, Ari Sephardi, Abuhav, Caro, Alsheich, Sanz and Breslov: not found online, so times above are Google opening windows or undated reviews. Wikipedia calls the El Senor synagogue (Old synagogues of Tiberias) a standing ruin rather than an active shul and lists Karlin-Stolin there with no current status. Canaan Spa and Villa Galilee: only Saturday check-in rules are stated.
