Meat kitchen; per its kitchen guidelines (updated 2009) the JCJ rabbi supervises and cooking stops 1 hour before Shabbat. Friday dinner and Saturday lunch for members and guests, visitors must book by Thursday evening (sign-up form at jccjapan.jp/shabbat-meals-sign-up; no prices read); trulytokyo says take-out is available, the JCJ page does not mention it. JCJ is not an Orthodox-run body, so ask whether your rabbi accepts the supervision. Google reviews say the meal is signed up for and paid in advance. A New Voices article (Jun 2021) calls the seating egalitarian and recalls a non-Jewish chef with a Jew lighting the oven (author calls it family lore); ask about current kitchen practice

What locals would tell you

  • Shabbat meals: Chabad Takanawa takes bookings on the chabad.jp online form (dinner $54, lunch $54, all meals $108 per person, half price for children and students); Chabad Omori uses the Shabbat Meal Reservation form on chabadjapan.org or WhatsApp +81 80-5090-7707 (price not published). Neither site states a deadline and a 2026 expat guide says every Chabad and synagogue in Japan requires advance reservation, so book early; Chana's Place takes Shabbat orders until Thursday 18:00 and the JCJ wants visitors booked by Thursday evening.
  • Where to stay: Takanawa/Sengakuji (5-15 min walk to Chabad Takanawa, most hotels) or Omori (2-15 min to Chabad Tokyo). Chabad names Smile Hotel Sengakuji-Ekimae (stairs open for Shabbat, familiar with Shabbat guests), Tokyu Stay Takanawa and Grand Prince Shin Takanawa as Shabbat friendly and Ent Terrace as an optional kosher hotel. Every Takanawa hotel on Chabad's list is marked 'electric key', meaning a key card; Booking.com lists key card access and its Q&A (automated, unverified) says no metal key is offered and the card runs the elevator. I found no hotel near Takanawa confirmed to offer a physical key, so ask your rabbi about key cards and call the hotel first. A furnished apartment one minute from Chabad Takanawa is offered by Chana, +81 90-2329-4498.
  • Timing: Tokyo has no daylight saving and sunset is early in winter (candle lighting 16:30 on 30 Oct, Shabbat out 17:26 per chabad.jp). Chabad Mincha is only 5-10 min after candle lighting, so be settled by early afternoon. David's Deli closes 15:00 Friday and is shut Saturday. Do all train travel before candle lighting; the nearest stations are Sengakuji (Takanawa) and Omori (JR Keihin-Tohoku, 6 min from Shinagawa).
  • Airports: HND is about 30 min by taxi to Takanawa (about 20 min to Omori; JR Keihin-Tohoku also works). NRT is about 75 min by taxi, or JR/N'EX to Shinagawa (60-90 min) then JR to Omori. A kosher outlet at HND or NRT was not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places and Chabad pages), so pre-order an airline kosher meal and have Chana's Place or Kosher Japan deliver to your hotel (Kosher Japan wants 1 day's notice). Convenience-store food carries no kosher certification; imported packaged goods at National Azabu may carry OU/OK/Kof-K/Star-K marks. Nissin World Delicatessen (Higashi-Azabu) is an import grocer whose kosher range I could not confirm.
  • Other communities: the Jewish Community of Japan (Hiroo, Shibuya; Rabbi Andrew Scheer; +81 3-3400-2559) hosts Friday dinner and Saturday lunch (book by Thursday evening) but serves members across the spectrum of observance, is listed under Masorti Olami, and a New Voices article (Jun 2021) calls its seating egalitarian (the chapel can host separate and mixed seating at once). An Orthodox or mechitza minyan there was not confirmed online as of Nov 2026 (the JCJ site publishes no service times), so it is not listed as a shul; ask before relying on it. Its site says it has a mikvah (supervision not stated). Beyond the two Chabads, another Orthodox minyan in Tokyo was not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places in English, Japanese and Hebrew, Chabad pages and Hebrew searches). Outside Tokyo: Chabad Kyoto (Rabbi Moti and Libi Grumach; 30-3 Okazaki Tennocho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto 606-8335; +81 75-751-7707; Google 4.9 from 170 reviews, a small shul with a minyan, meals described as pricey; mikvah via Rebbetzin Libi Grumach, WhatsApp +972 52 537 7717; Shabbat times were not found online as of Nov 2026, so call), Chabad Kobe & Osaka (4-12-12 Kitanocho, Chuo-ku, Kobe 650-0002; WhatsApp +81 90-8482-4770; Shabbat meals by reservation at jewishkobeosaka.com; a separate Osaka Chabad house was not found online as of Nov 2026, and Osaka is served from Kobe). The Jewish Community of Kansai (Kobe synagogue Ohel Shelomoh, est. 1937; +81 78-221-7236) is at the same Kitanocho address and Takayama (kosher meals and Shabbat dinners).
  • Local hechsherim: Chabad supervision (Rabbi Sudakevich at Chana's Place and Takanawa, Rabbi Edery at Kosher Japan and Omori), Japan Kosher Services at David's Deli, and the KJ mark from Kosher Japan on Japanese products. Earthquakes: Japan is quake-prone, so learn your hotel's evacuation route on arrival and ask Chabad or your rabbi beforehand what to do on Shabbat; saving life overrides Shabbat.
  • Hotel keys: reviews and Booking.com show key cards that also run the elevator at the Takanawa and Omori hotels checked (TripAdvisor guest reviews: Tokyu Stay Takanawa Jul 2024, APA Omori Oct 2024; Booking.com Q&A for APA Sengakuji: 'room keys and elevators can only be used with electronic devices'). No hotel was found offering a metal key. A Jun 2017 TripAdvisor review says Smile Hotel Sengakuji staff opened doors and allowed the emergency staircase for a Shabbat guest; ask the front desk in writing before you book.
