What locals would tell you

  • Shabbat meals: Chabad Vienna (Taborstraße 20a) hosts the 12:30 Shabbat day meal and visitors report a Friday night dinner; advance registration is required (WhatsApp +43 676 83181771 or the form linked from chabadvienna.com/faq; no prices or hotel delivery published). Alef Alef (Seitenstettengasse 2, next to the Stadttempel) lists Friday dinner and Saturday lunch at 45 EUR per person, by reservation only through its website order form. Schabbes Schuk (Kleine Sperlgasse 6), Kosher Deli (Kleine Sperlgasse 7) and Hager butcher sell Shabbat food for pickup; no source read offers hotel delivery.
  • Stay around Taborstraße and Karmelitermarkt: Hotel Stefanie (mechanical room doors, side entrance, 2 min to Chabad), Vayalen (kosher, mechanical keys on request) and Hotel Schani City (traditional key on request, kosher breakfast delivery) are the three with stated Shabbat arrangements. SO/ Vienna is on Chabad's Shabbat accommodation list but states no key policy. Hotel Marc Aurel is by the Stadttempel with no stated Shabbat setup and a Mar 2026 TripAdvisor review describes key cards, so ask for a manual key when you book.
  • Stadttempel: reopened Wed 9 Sep 2026 after the 2025-26 restoration (state ceremony 16 Sep 2026) (the IKG notice about closure until autumn 2026 is outdated). To pray there, email visitors@ikg-wien.at at least 3 days ahead with a passport copy and phone number, bring photo ID and allow time for security. Guided tours are planned to start in winter 2026 via the InfoPoint.
  • Friday closing is early: candle lighting is 16:10 on 6 Nov (Chabad Vienna). Hager butcher closes 12:00-13:00 (Chabad list vs Google), Kosher Deli 13:00-13:30, and Shefa, LaMehadrin, Ohel Bakery, Tzfas, VeAhavta, Prego and Lox and Truffles about 14:00 per Google (Chabad's list shows later Friday hours for VeAhavta and Lox and Truffles, so confirm); everything is closed Saturday. LaMehadrin and Hager are also closed Sunday. Bahur Tov, Mea Shearim, Simchas, Sababa, Novellino and Lunch King close Friday and Saturday (Google Maps).
  • Kashrut: the IKG Rabbinate says it handles hashgacha for each business on its kosher map but does not recommend specific ones; Chabad Vienna's food pages name the supervising rabbi: Schwarz (Alef Alef, Hager, Novellino), Weiss (Tzfas, Kosher Deli), Biderman (VeAhavta), Hofmeister (Lox and Truffles), Chutobli (Prego). Shefa, LaMehadrin and Ohel Bakery name none, so ask each venue for its current certificate.
  • Eruv: check eruv.at on Friday ('Eruv ist in Funktion' on 30 Oct 2026; hotline +43 699 12160880). Airport: no kosher outlet at VIE was confirmed; Chabad Vienna's tourist page lists Hebrew-speaking community drivers for transfers, and Hatzalah (mainly 2nd district) is +43 1 9978080.
  • Key-card check: Booking.com lists key-card access only for IMLAUER Hotel Nestroy, Novotel Wien City and SO/ Vienna, and a TripAdvisor review (Mar 2026) describes key cards at Hotel Marc Aurel. Only Stefanie, Vayalen and Schani state a traditional-key option; for the others ask in writing for a manual key and which lift you can use on Shabbat.
  • Shul times: Stadttempel, Chabad and Misrachi publish Friday and Shabbat times. For Agudas Israel, Ohel Moshe, Machsike Hadass, Khal Chassidim and the Bucharian shul, only weekday morning times appear in Google reviews (Ohel Moshe 08:00, Khal Chassidim 08:00, Bucharian 08:10; none confirmed by the shuls), so phone for Friday night and Shabbat.
  • Not found online as of Nov 2026 (checked Google Places and Chabad Vienna's current kosher list): Kosherland and Rafael's Supermarket, though lametayel.co.il (an Israeli travel site) still has an undated Kosherland supermarket page. Ask Chabad Vienna (WhatsApp +43 676 83181771) before relying on either.

Seen in older guides, checked Nov 2026: Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom (Praterstraße 1): renamed. Google Places (Nov 2026) lists only SO/ Vienna at this address, which Chabad Vienna lists; see hotels.
